What are bile acid sequestrants?
|
Bile acid sequestrants, also known as Bile acid resins belong to the class of cholesterol lowering medicines that show their effect by binding to the bile acid in the body. These medicines predominantly lower the presence of cholesterol by absorbing huge amounts from the small intestines. The medicine after absorbing the cholesterol, does not dissolve with the water based blood stream; instead, excrete the cholesterol in form of feces. Bile acid sequestrants are popularly known to cut down the level of LDL cholesterol by at least 15 % - 30 %. However, this group of medicines cannot be solely consumed for enhancing the level of HDL cholesterol, as they hardly increase the concentration of good cholesterol by 3 % - 5 %. In addition, these drugs do not prove beneficial at affecting the high levels of triglyceride in the blood stream.
There are three most known bile acid sequestrants available across the world, Colestid, available in form of tablet and resin, Welchol, available in form of tablet and last, Questran which is available in form of resin as well as wafer. Any one of these drugs is ideally taken in a conjunction with another medicine for effectively managing the cholesterol levels. |
