What Do These Cholesterol Tests Tell?
|
High levels of High density lipoprotein (HDL) are beneficial for the body rather than the Low density lipoprotein (LDL). Higher the HDL level in the body, lower is the risk of developing the heart attack or heart disease. Looking at the numerical value of the HDL and the LDL reported in the test, a doctor can predict whether the person is at the risk of heart attack or not. If the level of HDL is less than 40 mg/dL value for men and 50 mg/dL value for women, then the cholesterol test tells that there is increased risk of heart attack. If the amount of HDL is between 40-50 mg/dL for men and 50-59 mg/dL value then the test indicates then the patient is at risk of developing heart disease. If the HDL level is greater than 60 mg/dL than the risk of developing the heart disease is average. The risk factors of heart disease are different for children, adults and adolescents. The cholesterol test tells that the cholesterol level below 200mg/dL is considered as desirable. The test indicates that the level of cholesterol between 200-239 mg/dL reflects moderate risk. Since cholesterol tests are so informative and have capability of saving your life, so it necessary to carry out this test every once a year.
