NCEP was formed in the year 1985. The main purpose of NCEP is to educate the health professionals as well as common people about the advantages of having low cholesterol levels and how it helps in reducing the risks of coronary heart diseases. They also aim to reduce this risk through various awareness programs. The educational messages of NCEP have scientific evidence which is developed with the initiatives of private and public healthcare organizations. Thus it can be said that message of NCEP is the detection, evaluation and treatment of high cholesterol levels and to bring down the risk for various heart diseases. In the year 2004, NCEP brought a report which was based on the original educational information and included updates about the latest clinical trials and intensive therapies to the other risk prone groups. Among all the major updates , it was confirmed by 5 main clinical trials that ‘Statins’ helps to lower down cholesterol levels and it was also stated that changes in the therapeutic lifestyle also proves to be an essential component of treatment. Various other recommendations were also included in guidelines for the people falling in the high and moderate risk category. There were no changes recommended in the cut points of therapy and goal for those patients lying in the lower risk category.
