What Is Chylomicrons?
|
Chylomicrons are large sized particles of lipoprotein that are responsible for supplying the essential dietary lipids from intestines to other organs of the body. Chylomicrons belong to the group of five major lipoproteins known so far, chylomicrons, IDL, VLDL, HDL (high density lipoproteins) and LDL (low density lipoproteins). Unlike nutrients, large lipoproteins do not easily get dissolved in the water based blood stream because of which the body has to take extra measures to dissolve them. The first step for dissolving them completely involves their break down into smaller sizes so that they can be efficiently dissolved by the intestinal lining. Next, they are mixed with cholesterol and re-built in form of droplets that are covered by one of the layers of protein. This result into the formation of what we know as Chylomicrons.
Chylomicrons are essential form of dietary fats that dissolves into the blood stream and gets transported to various organs. However, it is essential to note that not all the pieces of Chylomicrons get dissolved by the body. There are few that remain undigested and build up on the arteries of the heart. In case, the accumulation of these lipoproteins becomes severe, the person develops blockages and clots in heart that can lead to heart strokes. |
