Functions of Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a wax like fatty substance. As thought of, cholesterol is not always bad. Some cholesterol is required by the body to perform certain important functions. Excess cholesterol is harmful. Some of the important functions which are performed by cholesterol are:

  1. Cholesterol is a wax like substance and it circulates in the body. Thus in a way, it provides protective coating to the arteries and the walls surrounding.
  2.   It helps in production of hormones that maintain the fat level in the body.
  3. It helps in making vitamin D in the body.
  4. Cholesterol is vital to produce certain acids like bile acids which aids digestion.
  5. Cholesterol helps in mental performance.
  6. Cholesterol is helpful in keeping the bones in a healthy condition.
  7. Cholesterol is the best source of fertility and vitality.
  8. Cholesterol enhances libido.
  9. It helps in supporting the nervous system while you are deeply in sleep.

Of course, with all these functions, it turns out to be the hero. But remember, excess of it can be harmful. The cholesterol which we are referring here is HDL which means good cholesterol. But LDL, bad cholesterol has its own negatives which are fatal. Thus having perfect levels of cholesterol is important to stay healthy.
