What does Cholesterol have to do with Plaque Buildup in the Arteries?
|
High level of Cholesterol in the body is one of the major reasons which causes plague build up in the arteries that ultimately lead to coronary heart diseases. The buildup of plague in the arteries depends upon what is present in your blood stream at a given time. The excess of bad cholesterol level (LDL) in the body is difficult to pull out and this excess amount enters the walls of the arteries and settles down there as plague. With the passage of time this plague causes the hardening and narrowing of the arteries and this condition is called atherosclerosis. Thus when coronary arteries become narrow due to plague buildup, it decreases the amount of oxygen rich blood which is carried to the heart and leads to condition of various heart diseases including the chest pain called angina.
In other condition when plague has a thin covering, they may rupture and release all the excess fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream which may cause blood clotting. The flow of the blood is blocked due this clotting and leads to heart attack or angina. Thus high level of cholesterol can lead to plague buildup and cause various heart related problems. |
