Can High Cholesterol Levels Put You At Risk For Disease?


High level of cholesterol can increase the risk for many diseases like coronary heart disease, peripheral heart disease or it might also cause stroke. It is recommended to lower your cholesterol levels to avert these diseases. High cholesterol can also cause high blood pressure and diabetes. Cholesterol is a fatty substance which might gets deposited inside the arteries if present in blood in large amount.

It generally causes the heart related diseases; Cholesterol generally builds up in your bloodstream. The arteries are damaged by the high concentration of the cholesterol in the arteries. It is also linked with the peripheral vascular disease which is cause due to the atherosclerosis where the arteries are narrowed by some substances like cholesterol deposition. It is seen that if a patient has a peripheral vascular disease he might also suffer the damage of the arteries in the other areas. That’s why cholesterol can be very lethal for your body as it can cause heart related diseases. The blood pressure becomes very high as heart has to strain harder to pump the blood though the narrowed arteries due to cholesterol. The cholesterol is of two types namely the LDL- cholesterol and HDL- cholesterol.

The low density lipoprotein is bad cholesterol which tends to deposit the cholesterol in the artery walls, whereas the high density lipoprotein is good cholesterol which tends to remove the cholesterol particles from the arteries.
