Can Weather Cause High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol levels in the body vary with the seasons. The bad cholesterol LDL levels are relatively less in the summer and spring compared to winter months. LDL cholesterol is responsible for cardiac arrest. Though there is no evidence for these fluctuations of cholesterol levels, a study showed that people are diagnosed with higher cholesterol levels in winter than during the summer.

The possible explanation for this phenomenon is the variation in the levels of blood lipid, which are usually high in winter and low in summer. The levels of HDL (the good cholesterol) are high during the summers and are less in the winter. This HDL protects you from heart attacks and artery blocks. This variation is more prominent in women. Changes in temperature or physical activity are also accounted for the fluctuations in cholesterol levels.

Usually there is greater calorie intake during the winter as compared to summer so as to cope up with the cold climate and hence more fats are taken. There are a few exceptions as these fluctuations in the relative volume of plasma levels of the blood as some even have relatively same levels in all the seasons and some do not. It’s better to take less fatty foods during the winter.
