The cholesterol level in both human sexes differs from each other. Women, compared to men usually tend to have a greater HDL-cholesterol level before the menopause cycle (that is below the age of 50) which drops significantly after menopause. So to remain healthy and bay off the risk of high cholesterol, women should start taking care of their cholesterol level much before their menopause. Maintaining an active lifestyle and nutritious balanced diet plays the key role for this matter.
The ‘National Cholesterol Education Program’ (NCEP) guidelines have prescribed separate treatments on the basis of LDL-cholesterol level in both men and women for controlling their cholesterol level. Some of the reasons which lead to high cholesterol problems in women are eating food is high in Trans-fat, cholesterol, saturated fat content like egg yolks, meat, butter, fried food, whole milk, cheese etc., increase in body weight and lesser physical activities.
Diseases like metabolic disorders or diabetes, kidney disorder, hypothyroidism or cirrhosis can lift up cholesterol level. Consuming medicines like Estrogen, Thiazide, Corticosteroids and Diuretics tends to raise the cholesterol level noticeably. As effects of high cholesterol level women tend to suffer from Peripheral Arterial Disease, Transient ischemic attack or Stroke and Coronary Artery Disease.
